In diarrhea, maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance is the first priority. Appropriate nutrition supports faster recovery and helps restore the intestinal lining. The key is not to stop eating, but to choose the right foods.
Rehydration Comes First
Each watery bowel movement causes meaningful loss of water, sodium, potassium, and chloride. Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is one of the fastest ways to restore balance. At home, salted-sugared water or ayran can also be used. Tea, coffee, carbonated drinks, and fruit juice are not ideal because sugar content may worsen diarrhea.
Safer Food Choices During Diarrhea (BRAT and Beyond)
- Plain white rice or rice porridge
- Boiled potatoes (low salt)
- Salted crackers, plain bread
- Ripe banana (potassium support)
- Apple puree or apple juice (pectin source)
- Lean boiled chicken or light broth
Foods to Avoid
High-fat foods, dairy products (temporary lactose intolerance may develop), raw vegetables and fruits, spicy meals, caffeine, and alcohol can irritate the gut and prolong symptoms. These should be postponed until stool consistency normalizes.
When to Seek Medical Care
Diarrhea with fever, symptoms lasting more than 48 hours, bloody or black stool, severe abdominal pain, or dehydration signs (dry mouth, reduced urination, dizziness) requires medical evaluation.
